Many people yearn to be more self-confident. Yet they have no idea how toachieve that objective. They look at others who have the gift and say, “Heythat’s what I want. I hate feeling unsure of myself. I wish I could stopobsessing about what others think of me and quit worrying about disappointingother people. I want to stop anguishing over my decisions and torturing myselfabout my mistakes. I think it would be so great to feel self-assured, hold myhead up high and stand tall. I’ve never been self-confident. I wish there were away I could be.”
There is a way. You don’t have to be born with self-confidence.Self-confidence can grow and flourish and ripen and blossom until you actuallycome to feel as though there is a different person inside of you. Here are someinsights that might facilitate the quest.
Learn what a self-confident person is really like. They are not cocky,know-it-all people who don’t care what anybody else thinks. They have theirdoubts. And make mistakes. And are far from perfect. However, they are willingto acknowledge their inadequacies without dwelling on them. They do this bymaintaining a sense of humor, putting problems in perspective, and focusingmainly on what they’ve done right, not wrong.
Though self-confident people do believe in themselves, they don’t try tosuffocate others with their ideas or beliefs. They are confident in what theyknow not only because they read, learn and think but also because they respecttheir instinct, intuition and the unique body of knowledge that they’vedeveloped by living life. They realize that one doesn't have to be labeled an“expert” to believe in one's own truths.
Self-confident people don’t undermine their own worth by comparingthemselves with others, only to conclude that they aren’t “good enough”. Theyappreciate their strengths and accomplishments and can acknowledge, withoutembarrassment, their weaknesses. They don’t live in the “victim” position. Evenif something really bad has occurred, they turn it into a challenge, rememberingto be grateful for the little things in life.
Self-confident people let the world know who they are. If they wantsomething badly enough, they know they have every right to “go for it.” Yet,they also know that the path will rarely be easy. Mistakes, blunders andfailures are part of the learning process. They seek to learn from theirmistakes and do not waste time torturing themselves over what “could havebeen”.
Self-confident people are not obstinate people. If they have an idea aboutsomething and it differs from the way another person is thinking about it, theywill usually try to look at it from that person’s point of view, see why itmakes sense to them. Yet, a confident person’s sense of self is grounded. Itdoes not blow in the wind. Their ideas do not fluctuate based on what othersdeem are important.

I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interviewof my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe andfelt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me:"You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life hasnever been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height andpsychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matterhow hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.
As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White foran English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the lastdwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English.Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To mygreat surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in theperformance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was abig hit.
Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is aninpidual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our inpiduality willtransform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors andtextures.
A world deprived of persity would be a bland and boring place. The realtragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in aworld in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charminggirl.
Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'drather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White amongnothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute myinpidual and unique colors to create a more perse universe. Please, beyourself.

Remember, I have just entered junior high school.
